"Through partnerships with families, community and staff, we will provide exemplary educational opportunities, preparing all students for successful futures."

EXPLANATION OF LOCKDOWN

Since the Montevideo schools have had a few lockdowns lately, we want to be sure parents and the community knows and understands the reasoning behind a lockdown and what occurs within the schools.

When one building goes into a lockdown, all exterior doors in all the schools are automatically locked.  During a lockdown, staff works closely with the police department. It is important that everyone involved (staff, students, parents) takes these lockdowns seriously and no one panics.

Following are the three levels of lockdown and what will take place within the schools:

Code Red – means there is an imminent threat either inside the building or directly
        outside the building.

  • Exterior doors are locked
  • Lock classroom doors
  • Pull shades
  • Turn off lights
  • Keep everyone in classroom, quiet & hidden
  • Teach-On – means there is a potential threat in the immediate area.

  • Exterior doors are locked
  • Lock classroom doors
  • Pull shades
  • Continue teaching
  • No one can leave the room, move around the building or enter/leave the building.
  • Code Yellow – means there is a problem identified somewhere near one of the buildings or in the community.

  • Exterior doors are locked.
  • Students and staff can move around the building
  • No one (staff or students) can leave or enter the building.
  • Traveling teachers will need to visit with their building principal, in advance, to determine where they go.

Blue flashing light – Near the main school entrance at each of the four buildings, there is a blue light that will flash whenever the doors are automatically locked (there are two at the middle school).  Soon, there will also be an audible sound when the light is flashing to make people more aware.  If anyone sees these lights flashing, please return to your vehicle or school bus.

Lockdown drills are practiced regularly.  During a drill, the doors will be locked and the blue light will blink. Normally lockdown drills are completed within five minutes.
