One of the greatest strengths of Montevideo Public Schools is our people. Every student brings unique talents, interests, and experiences to our classrooms. Every employee contributes to a culture where students feel safe, valued, challenged, and supported. Our diversity strengthens our school community and prepares students to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Throughout the summer, many areas across our campus received a much-needed facelift, thanks to our outstanding Campus Enhancement Specialists. Their pride in their work and attention to detail have our buildings looking their very best. From fresh paint to landscaping improvements and countless behind-the-scenes projects, our facilities are ready to welcome students and staff for another great school year. We extend our sincere appreciation to every member of our maintenance and custodial crew for the tremendous work completed during the summer months.
Planning also continued for the future of our district. Design teams have met weekly since March to help shape the vision for our new Performing Arts Center, security enhancements, and the modernization of several high school classrooms. The collaboration and thoughtful input from students, staff, community members, architects, and engineers continue to move the project forward. Depending on spring weather conditions, construction could begin as early as March 2027. This exciting project represents another investment in opportunities for our students and for generations of Thunder Hawks to come.
Student involvement continues to be one of our greatest sources of pride. During the past five years, Montevideo Public Schools has experienced a steady increase in student participation in extracurricular activities. Research consistently demonstrates that students who participate in athletics, fine arts, clubs, leadership opportunities, and other activities are more likely to develop confidence, build meaningful relationships, strengthen leadership skills, and experience success beyond graduation.
Our Thunder Hawks continue to excel in every arena. We celebrate conference championships, section championships, state tournament appearances, superior ratings at music contests, academic accomplishments, and countless individual achievements. Many of our students successfully balance academics with competing as three-sport athletes or participating in multiple music and other activities. Their dedication reflects the commitment and perseverance that define our school district.
A special congratulations goes to our outstanding marching band. Throughout the summer, they proudly represented Montevideo Public Schools by performing in community celebrations across the region. Their performance during Fiesta Days was another wonderful example of the pride and talent our students displayed. We thank our directors, students, volunteers, and families for representing the Thunder Hawk brand with such distinction.
Our success extends well beyond the classroom because of the incredible support we receive from parents, businesses, civic organizations, volunteers, alumni, and community members. Public education is truly a community investment, and Montevideo continues to demonstrate what is possible when a community comes together to support its children. Montevideo remains a wonderful place to raise a family, and our schools play an important role in making our community thrive.
