The entire month of February is dedicated to promote a love of reading and being read to! What can you do in your home to promote reading this month?
- Ask your child what their favorite book is.
- Read what interests your child.
- Increase the time you spend reading at home this month.
- Find a regular time of day when you can dedicate reading into your day.
- Read together.
- Have fun while reading - read with expression, act out the story or use props that go along with the story.
- Change your setting - read in different places in your home or in a dark room with a flashlight. Get comfy!
- Take a trip to the library.
The benefits of reading together with your child go far beyond literacy. By reading to your child starting at a young age, even before they're able to communicate verbally, you help lay the neurological groundwork for effective language use and literacy.
- Language development
- Empathy and emotional awareness
- The parent-child bond
