Children's Dental Health Month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, a great time to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. According to the Minnesota Department of Health, one fifth of 3rd graders in the Minnesota public school system have untreated tooth decay, which is almost completely preventable with proper oral care. Poor oral health is one of the most common reasons for missed school, leading to lower grades than in children with good oral health. By age 8, over 50% of children have one or more cavities. Cavities in baby teeth can negatively affect permanent teeth and lead to future dental issues. This is why it is so important to start to teach children about dental health at a young age.

When brushing teeth, it is recommended to brush two times a day for two minutes each time with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. It’s also important to replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months! Floss daily and drink water with fluoride. Fluoride is an important mineral for children that helps protect teeth and make them more resistant to acid. You should help your child brush their teeth until they are between 6-8 years old. It is also recommended to visit a dentist every 6 months for a checkup! It is never too early to start practicing good oral hygiene with your child.
